My yamaha grizzly 700 2010 engine ain't spinnin'!

my yamaha grizzly 700 2010 engine just ain't turning over, and the starter sounded absolutely awful

Naturally, I figured it was the starter, so I ordered a new one. Then, I found out about this "starter clutch" thing, so I grabbed one of those too.

Well, the new starter came in today, and it fixed the squat! I popped off the left side case, and now when I hit the starter button, all the gears inside are moving, but that big outer stator cover just sits there totally still.

So, is this what a bad starter oneway clutch actually looks like?

Feels like I'm getting closer, but I'm trying to confirm if that's the culprit. Any ideas?

It sounds like you might be dealing with a faulty starter one-way clutch on your Grizzly 700. If you notice that the starter is spinning but the outer stator cover isn't budging, then the clutch isn't engaging as it should. A good way to check this is by manually rotating the clutch,you should be able to spin it easily in one direction, and it should lock in the opposite direction. If it's not locking, that's likely the issue. Have you ordered a replacement clutch yet?

I think you're almost certainly right. agree with @GrizzInMyPants that sounds exactly like a bad starter oneway clutch.
When the starter spins all the inner gears but the outer cover (which is connected to the crankshaft) doesn't move, it means the oneway clutch isn't engaging to transfer that spinning motion to the engine.

Once you replace that oneway clutch, your new starter should finally have something to "grab" onto and get that engine spinning

Wait, I'm confused, you replaced the starter and the clutch and the engine is still not starting?
